Hurtado Scholars Program

Every gift really does matter

Every gift makes a difference at Rockhurst High School. When you make a donation to the Hurtado Scholars Program, you join alumni, parents, friends, students, faculty, and staff who care enough to make a young boy’s dream a reality by giving him a Catholic education, animated by the Jesuit Vision, as part of his life.

The Hurtado Scholars Program is an educational and leadership opportunity offered by Rockhurst High School to prepare middle school boys for success at a college preparatory high school and beyond. Named for St. Alberto Hurtado, SJ, the Hurtado Scholars Program is inspired by a Chilean Jesuit priest who founded homes and offered education to impoverished boys throughout his native country in the mid-20 th century. Canonized in 2005, Fr. Hurtado’s life and work inspires the values and beliefs of a Catholic Jesuit education. “Bringing Light to Potential” is the Program’s theme, serving a future generation of “men for others.”

Generous gifts have made tremendous achievements possible for the Hurtado Scholars Program:

  • There are 31 Scholars enrolled from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, and 53 Hurtado Scholars total.
  • The first class of Scholars Alumni enrolled at Rockhurst High School in 2016.
  • Jesuit Partner schools are Holy Cross, Our Lady of Hope, and St. Regis Academy.
  • Scholars perform community service, enjoy field trips, and grow spiritually, with academic studies.
  • Scholars have improved more than 2.5 grade levels in Math and Reading in just two years.
  • Students work with the "Thinking through Art Program" at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

Impact of Donations

  • $25 pays for transportation for one Scholar to and from the after school program per week
  • $150 pays for the summer school family commitment for a Scholar
  • $250 pays for an annual web based Language Arts and Math enrichment program and additional academic materials for each Scholar
  • $500 pays for a summer school field trip
  • $2,500 pays for lunch for all the Scholars during the summer program
  • $11,800 pays for the annual tuition gap for currently enrolled Scholars at Rockhurst High School

As the economy continues to impact families seeking to pay for their Hurtado Scholars education, and eventually their Rockhurst High School formation, the school’s financial aid resources are being stretched as never before.
