Rockhurst Spends Summer with "Just Mercy"

Last fall, Pope Francis announced an Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy that runs from December 8th, 2015 to November 20th, 2016.

“Mercy” is “The willingness to enter into the chaos of another.”  according to James Keenan, SJ Boston College University.

Corporal Works of Mercy include: feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, sheltering the homeless, visiting the sick, visiting the prisoners, burying the dead, and giving alms to the poor.  Spiritual Works of Mercy include: counseling the doubtful, instructing the ignorant, admonishing the sinner, comforting the sorrowful, forgiving injuries, bearing wrongs patiently, and praying for the living and the dead.

Here at Rockhurst, a faculty and staff committee, led by Mrs. Gansner, selected the book, "Just Mercy" by Bryan Stevenson for the whole school to read as part of the Year of Mercy.  The book is especially connected to the Corporal Work of Mercy, “visiting the prisoners.”

Select seniors tested the book during their book club project in Theology and Mr. Wickenhauser’s English Class.

Other activities during the school's year-long celebration of mercy include: Sister Helen Prejean will be the guest speaker at our Harvest Food Drive Prayer Service to discuss the book and we will host an all school discussion.

This summer, all students are required to read "Just Mercy" in preparation for Theology class discussions regarding the book.  We encourage each Hawklet to tweet a picture to @RockhurstHS using the #RockMercy of them reading in various environments.  The winner for the best picture will receive two tickets to a Royals game of your choice during the month of September.  Some good ideas may include on vacation or at famous landmarks around the Kansas City area.

Keep it appropriate but clever and fun!  Below are few examples already from students (and Mr. Brack!) from TIE Tennessee.

See the Summer Reading page for details on the assignment.
