Seniors Begin Final Semester with Service

During his four years at Rockhurst High School, each student is asked to learn about and live out the five “Grad at Graduation” qualities.  They are: open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to doing justice.

One of the best opportunities to embody the fifth quality, committed to doing justice, is through the Senior Service Project.

Since the early 1970s, Rockhurst seniors have served agencies throughout Kansas City and assisted thousands of people through more than 725,000 hours of service.  The school's students have served, and in turn learned from, young children, the mentally, physically and emotionally disabled, the homeless, and the elderly.

These projects, which take place during the first three weeks of second semester (Jan. 4-23 for the 2018 year), give the soon-graduated Hawklets a chance to give back to the community.  In recent years, the Projects have also included an international option - with groups traveling to Guatemala or Tijuana to focus on construction and visiting hospitals and residential centers for children.  This year, 42 students will participate in these international experiences.  The seniors remaining in Kansas City will volunteer at more than 60 different agencies.

"In some ways, the Senior Service Project is the culmination of what every student has experienced here at Rockhurst; whether in English or Math classes, retreats, athletic and artistic successes," said Mr. Max Magee, Ignatian Service Coordinator.  "During the month of January, each senior should be intentionally sharing their gifts and talents to others outside the walls of Rockhurst for the common good and greater glory of God."

The experience of each student’s project are intended to fit under the following characteristics: personal, special needs, enduring, different, reflective and challenging.  Specifically, students are expected to go out of their comfort zones and lend their times and talents somewhere they probably never would have expected when they came to Rockhurst as freshmen.
