Teacher Mixes History & Technology to See KC in New Light

Social Studies teacher Mr. Tim Reidy competed at the quarterly LRNG KC Playlist Design Challenge and earned 2nd place with his presentation "The Growth of Kansas City's Transportation, Wartime Efforts, Crime & Politics, Suburbanization & Race and Culture."  The KC Social Innovation Center (KCSIC) is the organization here in Kansas City offering learners and organizations a new way to find enrichment and develop skill-sets.  The LRNG KC site (lrng.org/kc) is the new platform upon which playlists (quests) of XPs (learning experiences) stack up to provide learners with local means to level up and achieve new competencies contained in digital credentials.

Mr. Reidy and fellow applicants representing an array of KC organizations competed at Pitch Night hosted by the KCSIC and held at Think Big Coworking in the Crossroads on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 during Global Entrepreneurship Week.  The grand prize was $1000 to help launch great ideas and develop material on the LRNG KC platform for youth benefit.  The pitches were judged by a panel of outstanding local leaders in education innovation: Kiley Larson, representing LRNG National, Janice Wait, representing the Mozilla Foundation, and Neelima Parasker, CEO of SnapIT Solutions.

Mr. Reidy's Kansas City History playlist received strong recognition for its creativity, learning outcomes, impact, opportunity, and deliverability.  He aims to leverage technology to help develop historical research skills and train students to see their city with new eyes and techniques.  The promise behind Mr. Reidy's playlist is the connection to an array of other historically relevant quests (playlists) that students and families can participate in and develop a deeper understanding of KC History.

Rockhurst High School is a new partner on the LRNG KC platform, kick-starting its arrival with the recent 2016 KC Juggling Festival and Juggling Novice Badge. According to KCSIC members, a big thanks goes out to Mr. Greg Owsley, Director of STEAM at Rockhurst High School, for his continued work connecting learners to innovative educational initiatives city-wide.
