Over the days of November 16-20, eight Rockhurst High School students traveled to New York City to compete in the Empire Mock Trial World Championship.  They were led by teacher-coach Stephen Derrington '98 and attorney-coach Tracy Hancock.

Thirty-six teams from as far away as Ireland all competed in the United States District Court - Southern District of New York Courthouse.  This marked the first time Rockhurst's team, the "Mocklets" participated in the World Championship.  Earlier this year, the team competed in a tournament in Atlanta, and San Francisco last year.  But the New York tournament is the most prestigious.

Rockhurst worked its way to a 5th place finish.

"The team performed spectacularly," said Coach Derrington.  "The hard work and dedication the team showed to getting every detail right was outstanding.  Co-captains [seniors] Paul Odu and Drake Rebman were excellent guides for our newest members.  We owe particular gratitude to Mr. Tracy Hancock, who guided the students through the legal ins and outs of the case and refined their presentation skills."

In addition to the great team performance, two individuals earned recognition.  Sophomore Steven Burdge placed 8th in Best Witness and Odu took home 1st Place in Best Attorney.

"We had major support from our rookie attorneys and witnesses, and I believe that they are the real reason why we were so successful in New York," said Odu.  "Additionally, we had strong and consistent performances from our veteran attorneys.  We prepared really hard during the last few weeks before we left for New York, and it became immediately clear that this hard work had paid off."

The team now focuses its efforts on Missouri competition and working toward a State Championship.
