Fr. Baum's Rockhurst Service Fulfilled

After more than 13 years of dedicated service to Rockhurst High School, Rev. Terrence A. Baum, SJ, will begin his next chapter of Jesuit work at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati.  He officially concludes his presidency at Rockhurst on June 30, 2017 and will begin at St. Xavier in October.

Fr. Baum began his tenure as Rockhurst's 16th president in February of 2004, and has facilitated the school's growth during those years.

"[Fr. Baum's] impact will remain imprinted on the school, most especially in cultivating a culture of giving and stewardship that produced $41.3 million for operations, the endowment, and campus improvements, while expanding the annual tuition assistance budget to $2.4 million during his tenure," said Mr. Allen K. Roberson '84, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees.

The campus improvements mentioned have spanned from the completion of the Millennial Master Plan, which included the construction of the Loyola Center, building the Dining Commons, to the current projects for the Building on Our Tradition campaign.

The "BOOT" campaign has been highlighted by the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) efforts and establishment of seven Active Learning Classrooms, which facilitate group learning and innovation.  The beginning of the 2017-18 academic year will include the completion of the lower campus improvements - a 16,000 square-foot, two-story building that will include locker rooms, training facility, coaches offices, alumni gathering area, and multi-purpose student spaces; as well as an Academic Learning Commons, which will serve as the epicenter of student life in the school's main building, and include six new Active Learning Classrooms.

"The Board of Trustees is profoundly grateful to Fr. Baum for his leadership and service," said Mr. Jonathan R. Haden '75, Chairman of the Board of Trustees.  "He leaves Rockhurst in excellent shape spiritually, educationally and financially, and his many gifts to us will be remembered well.”

Rev. William T. Sheahan, SJ - former Rockhurst High School teacher, co-founder of the Hurtado Scholars Program, and rector of the Rockhurst Jesuit Community - will serve as the school's interim president beginning July 1, 2017.  Earlier this year, Rockhurst selected Mr. David J. Laughlin as its 17th president.  Laughlin worked as the school's principal from 2000-2005 and has since been the president of St. Louis University High School. He officially begins his presidency at Rockhurst High School on July 1, 2018.

Fr. Baum left the following message for the Rockhurst community.  AMDG
