Congratulations to the varsity Baseball Team for winning the MSHSAA, District 13 Championship. The Hawklets defeated Lee's Summit West 11-1 in 6 innings to win the title.
Next up is Blue Springs South in the Sectional game next Tuesday, May 21 at KCMO 3&2 Stadium. Game time is 6pm. MSHSAA admission fee is $6 for ages 6 and up for this game.
Congratulations to Coach Mike O'Leary and the varsity golf team for winning second place at the MSHSAA State Golf Tournament in Springfield. Rockhurst was led by senior Patrick Byrne (tied for overall medalist with 146), senior Danny Summers, senior Brian Wade, senior Drew Hill, and sophomore Peter Dierks. Congrats to the Hawklet Golf Team!
Congrats to the Varsity Tennis team for advancing to the Team Sectionals by winning the Team District match against Park Hill South 5-0. The Team Sectionals and Team Quarterfinals will be held on Saturday, May 18th at Minor Park Tennis Courts at 9am and 1pm. In the Individual Sectional Tournament, Alex Koca and Jack Evans advanced to State in singles play. Also advancing to State is the doubles team of John Nogalski and Jacob Moore.
Congratulations to the track & field squad. They competed at Districts over the weekend and finished 2nd earning just the second district plaque since the 1970s and repeating last season's 2nd place finish.
Qualifiers for the sectional meet were: 4th place: 100m dash - Dylan Stoetzer; 3rd place: Triple Jump - Curtis Goldmon, 1600m run - Alex Lombardo, 800m run - Alex Lombardo; 2nd place: 200m dash - Tommy Seitz, 4X400 relay (Wondabeka Ashenafi, Patrick Bowen, Dylan Stoetzer, Carson Bode); 1st place: Long jump - Curtis Goldmon, 800m run - Carson Bode, 4X800 (Chaz Trujillo, William Thompson, Alex Lombardo, Carson Bode), 4x100 (Max Linscott, Dylan Stoetzer, Tommy Seitz, Curtis Goldmon).

Congratulations to Mike Dierks (RHS Class of 1991) on being named the new Athletic Director at Rockhurst starting next school year. Mike has been at Rockhurst HS for 18 years, 15 as the Head Cross Country Coach and 15 years as Head Track and Field Coach. Mike graduated from the University of Notre Dame, where he ran cross country for the Irish. Mike will continue to be the Head Coach for Cross Country, but will no longer coach Track and Field.
In addition to a new Athletic Director, Rockhurst welcomes back Brian Bruce (RHS Class of 1997) to campus. Brian will take over as the Assistant Athletic Director beginning next school year. Brian has spend the last several years as the play-by-play radio announcer for the Kansas City T-Bones minor league baseball team. He received his undergraduate degree from Marquette University and his masters degree from KU. Brian will teach photography in addition to his duties as Assistant AD.
Rockhurst welcomes back to the mat Rich Wikiera! Coach Wikiera will be the new Head Wrestling Coach starting next school year. Rich began teaching at Rockhurst in 1981. He was the Head Wrestling Coach for 20 years in the 80's and 90's. After some time away from RHS, Rich returned to the ROCK to see his sons, Rich Jr. (RHS Class of 1998) and Drew (RHS Class of 2002) graduate. Rich's son Matt will be a senior next year, and managed for the wrestling team this past season. Coach Wikiera teaches human physiology, anatomy, and environmental science as well as moderating the raquetball club and herpetology club. Good luck Coach Wikiera!
Mark Nusbaum, head varsity basketball coach at Rockhurst High School for 14 years, announced today that he is retiring from his coaching position. Pete Campbell, assistant varsity basketball coach, will replace Nusbaum’s in the 2013-14 season, announced Gregory Harkness, Rockhurst principal.Nusbaum steps down after leading the 2012-13 Hawklets to a Class 5 State Championship with a 26-5 season. Last week he received the Lambert Award given to the Kansas City metro area’s top basketball coach. He was also named the Missouri State Boys Basketball Coach of the Year in Class 5, and on April 27 will be inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in Springfield.“Mark has truly had an incredible impact on high school basketball coaching in our city, state and region,” said Harkness. “At Rockhurst, he has managed a program in which hundreds of boys have grown as students, athletes and men. We will miss his direction, but the program is in an excellent position with Pete Campbell moving up to head coach.
Congratulations to the 2012 Swim and Dive Team as they were recently selected as an Academic All American Team by the National Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association. In addition, seniors Alex Lombardo, Nicholas Hense, and Louis Behnen were selected as Academic All Americans. Congratulations for to these young men for their contributions in the pool as well as their achievements in the classroom.
Congratulations to head basketball coach, Mark Nusbaum, for his upcoming induction into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame! Mark will receive this honor on Saturday, April 27th in Springfield, MO.
Coach Nusbaum was presented with the Lambert Award on Thursday, April 11th, given to the KC Metro Area's Most Outstanding Basketball Coach. This year's Hawklets went 26-5 in route to a State Championship.
The 2012-13 Hawklets won the Class 5 State Championship by defeating Columbia Hickman in the semi-finals and DeSmet in the title game. Mark has been the head coach at 5 schools during his 32-year career. He first coached at Russell (IA) and went 27-33 in a 3-year stint there. He then traveled down the road to Albia (IA) for a 2-year campaign going 20-19. His life took a turn southward as he landed at O'Hara where he originally started there as an assistant varsity coach. It wasn't long before Mark took over the boy's program at OHS and led them to a 132-82 record over an 8 year period. Next up was Liberty HS where he won his first state championship and amassed a 105-34 record in 5 years. Fortunately for Rockhurst, Mark brought his talents to south KC and has coached here for 14 years. He has led the Hawklets to 5 Final Fours in his tenure with a record of 285-110. Congrats Coach Nusbaum on a well-deserved honor!
Congratulations to senior basketball player Kyle Wolf for being named the 2012-13 Gatorade Missouri Boys Basketball Player of the Year as well as the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association's "Mr. Show Me Basketball," recognizing the best boys basketball player in all 5 classes in the state of Missouri. Kyle is also a finalist for the DiRenna Award, given annually to the best boys basketball player in the KC Metro area. In addition, head basketball coach Mark Nusbaum was named the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association's Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
Congratulations to Coach Nusbaum, his coaching staff, and the Rockhurst basketball team for winning the 2013 MSHSAA basketball state championship! The Hawklets defeated DeSmet 73-59 in the state championship game at Mizzou Arena. This is the school's 4th state championship in basketball. The team finished the historic season with a 26-6 record.
Congratulations to senior Drew Daniels for becoming the first-ever State Champion in the history of Rockhurst Wrestling! Drew wrestled in the 160lb. weight class this season and only had two losses all season. He will be attending the Naval Academy next year to wrestle and study. At the two previous MSHSAA State Wrestling Championships, Drew finished second as a junior at 160lbs, and as a sophomore he finished 4th at 145lbs.

Congratulations to the Swim and DIve Program for winning their 9th consecutive MSHSAA Swim and Dive State Championship. The Hawklets were led by seniors Louis Behnen and Alex Lombardo. Also, playing a major role in the team's success was freshman diver David Knopke.
Congratulations to Head Swim and Dive Coach Paul Winkeler for being honored as the 2012 NFHS Coaches Association Missouri Coach of the Year in Boys Swimming and Diving. Coach Winkeler's contributions to our swimmers and divers, and the sport of Swimming and Diving in Missouri are deserving of our appreciation. Thank you Coach Winkeler, and congratulations on a well-deserved award.
Congratulations to Varsity Assistant Soccer Coach, Mike Wickenhauser, for being named the Assistant Soccer Coach of the Year by the Missouri Soccer Coaches Association. Coach Wickenhauser has been the varsity assistant to Coach Chris Lawson for 13 seasons, and has been a part of 3 State Championships, 2 Second Place finishes, and 3 Third Place finishes. Congrats Coach Wick!
Congratulations to seniors Brendan Marquart and Jim Brazeal for being selected as All-Americans for 2012. Brendan was chosen as a 2012 Choice Hotels International High School All-American and played in the All-American game on December 8, 2012 in Birmingham, AL. Jim was selected as an honorable mention and alternated player to the team. Congratulations to both outstanding Rockhurst Soccer players.
Congratulations to head soccer coach, Chris Lawson, for being named the 2011 MSHSAA and NFHS Missouri Soccer Coach of the Year. Chris has won this award three times. In addition, Coach Lawson has recognized as a National Soccer Coaches Association Coach of the Year five times. He has also been the Midwest Regional Coach of the Year four times, as well as being a finalist for a National Coach of the Year four times. Congratulations to Coach Lawson, his assistant coaches, and the soccer program.
Congratulations to Coach Paul Winkeler, head swim and dive coach, for being named the Missouri State Swim and Dive Coach of the Year for 2011. This is the sixth time Coach Winkeler has been honored for this award at the state level, and he has won Regional Coach of the Year twice as Rockhurst's head coach. During his coaching tenure at Rockhurst, the Hawklets have been State Champions for the last 8 years. Congratulations Coach Winkeler!
Beginning with the 2013 lacrosse season, Rockhurst High School will join 14 area teams in the Lacrosse Association of Kansas City (LAKC). Rockhurst has competed for 18 seasons in the Missouri Scholastic Lacrosse Association (MSLA), which until LAKC formed last year was the only association in the region. The other 12 Division I MSLA teams are all located in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Rockhurst won the MSLA Championship five times and took second place three times.
Congratulations to the newest members of the Rockhurst Sports Hall of Fame. The following men were inducted into the Hall at halftime of the Rockhurst varsity football game against East St. Louis on Friday, August 24th. They are: Paul Ammatelli, Class of 1982 (Soccer), Peter Brown, Class of 1976 (Tennis), Jerry Krause, Class of 1956 (Golf), William Krizman, Class of 1976 (Tennis), Eric Berg (Coach of Track & Football), William McMahon, Class of 1937 (Football), Brian Meyers, Class of 1972 (Football), Jerry Reardon, Class of 1969 (Football), Thomas Stephenson, Class of 1967 (Football), and Kevin Wall, Class of 1970 (Basketball).
